Every electronic device in the house, in the lab, everywhere, is based on quantum theory. It is amazing that a subject that is so profoundly mystical is also so useful.

Chris Isham is searching for a consistent quantum theory of gravity and exploring the very foundations of quantum mechanics.

General relativity is the currently favourable model of space and time, whereas quantum mechanics deals with the stuff, matter if you like, which appears in space and time.

Professor Christopher Isham from Imperial College London is the winner of the 2011 Dirac Medal awarded by the Institute of Physics.
